President Putin has promised to “step up the fight against terror” after Russia’s ambassador in Turkey was murdered yesterday. Andrey Karlov was shot dead by an off-duty police officer, as he was making a speech in Ankara. The leaders of both Russia and Turkey have described the killing as an attempt to damage relations between the two countries, which have backed opposing sides in the Syrian civil war.
